Statistics

The statistics department sits within the school’s mathematics department and is taught by two classroom teachers, with support from the rest of the wider team including the Director of Learning for Mathematics. All teachers in the department follow up-to-date and detailed schemes of work which include online resources such as Sparx maths.

Statistics Intent

The intent of the statistics curriculum is to consolidate skills learnt through the usual Mathematics curriculum, develop them further and show students how they are applied in the real world.

The statistics course has been developed to help foster intrigue in students. While it may only be chosen by a small proportion of the cohort each year, we believe it is a vital part of a wider mathematical understanding. It is a valuable course that helps prepare students to study mathematics beyond GCSE and helps our students stand out in an ever-competitive post-16 selection process.

The Curriculum

GCSE statistics and further mathematics can be selected as an option at GCSE.  The statistics qualification gives students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge in a key component of maths that is relevant to everyday life. They’ll develop a core statistical grounding, as well as transferable skills and understanding that is applicable to a range of other subjects. It will also benefit those progressing to other A-level subjects such as the Sciences, Geography and Psychology.

Alongside the main statistics course, students will also be given the opportunity to study Further Mathematics. This course offers the opportunity for stretch and challenge that builds on the Key Stage 4 curriculum and is intended as an additional qualification to the Mathematics GCSE. The course is not strictly a CGSE, but rather a Level 2 certificate which is equivalent. On this course students develop their higher order mathematical skills in greater depth, particularly in algebraic reasoning, and are introduced to areas such as calculus and matrices, thus preparing them fully to maximise their potential in further studies at Level 3.

The Further Mathematics course is linked with the Statistics course; you cannot choose Statistics on its own.
