Physical Education

The Physical Education Department consists of eight dedicated members of staff, all of which are fully qualified and experienced teachers who are committed to the sporting development of all students. The Department is led by Mr M Hartley, who is happy to answer of your queries.

PE Intent

The WMA PE Curriculum will develop students’ health and wellbeing in a way that promotes lifelong physical activity. Students will have the opportunity to build character and embed wider core values through engaging in competitive sport, physical activity, and leadership.

Throughout the KS3 journey, students will take on the role as a performer, official and umpire. This promotes the holistic development of students whilst supporting them to acquire strong leadership skills and flourish in and beyond the school setting.

In KS4, students have access to the OCR Sports Science course, which allows students to further enhance their subject knowledge of physical education whilst still participating in core PE. Core PE lessons provide students with an opportunity to engage in a wide variety of sports which should inspire students to become physically competent in a way which promotes lifelong physical activity.

Core values that underpin the curriculum are embedded within every PE lesson to ensure students become better versions of themselves both inside and outside of sport. A healthy active lifestyle is at the forefront of the curriculum, and, through high-quality PE lessons, the aim is to provide foundations for lifelong activity.

The Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Students receive three hours of high quality PE over a two week cycle in year 7 and four hours of high quality PE over a two week timetable in year 8 and 9. The PE curriculum is broad & diverse with students studying traditional Games activities, as well as, Gymnastics, Dance, OAA and Athletics. Assessments are also carried out for each activity studied.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage four, students still receive two hours of high quality PE over a two week cycle. The curriculum is again broad and diverse, expanding on knowledge and skills learnt in KS3 focusing on Games, Aesthetic and Athletic activities. The department is continually striving to offer a range of new and different activities in order to maximise participation and enjoyment. Physical Education can provide a valuable release from the increasing pressures and demands of examinations and coursework.

Examination courses

Examination courses are a key feature in the department and the PE qualifications delivered are reviewed, depending on the needs of the cohort.

OCR Sports Science

OCR Science and Sport Studies Specification

The specification contains information regarding the course content; which consists of 3 units (2 compulsory and 1 choice unit). The units our students follow are:

R180 - Reducing the risk of sports injury and dealing with medical conditions (40%) - EXAM - COMPULSORY

R181 - Applying principles of training (40%) - COURSEWORK - COMPULSORY

R183 - Nutrition and Sports Performance (20%) - COURSEWORK

Students will study the course from Year 10 over two years, with five hours of lessons over a two week timetable. The majority of lessons are made up of theory, some practical sessions are included dependent on the unit of work being taught. Students will learn specification content in lessons and then will be given an assignment brief to work from in order to complete their coursework.

PE Kit

The department has a clear and simple policy regarding the wearing of suitable PE kit. Please click on the link to see the policy in detail.

After School Clubs

Extra-curricular provision is a major strength of the school. A significant number of students represent the school in a wide range of sports, playing against other schools both locally and regionally. Teams are represented in football (girls and boys), basketball (girls and boys), rugby (girls and boys), netball, badminton, rounders, cricket, and athletics. An increasing number of students perform at a very high level in their chosen sports; some participate at national level. Other activities are offered on a recreational level; these include fitness and table tennis.

The department organises and hosts inter-house competitions where students can represent their house in a range of sporting activities. Our biggest house competitions are our annual sports days, where we use Princess Marys running track in Liversedge, to host a highly competitive athletics event.

The school has been actively involved in the RFU All Schools programme for the last five years and as a result the numbers of students, both boys and girls, playing rugby union has increased dramatically. Our relationship with Cleckheaton RUFC continues to be strong.

VIBE Performance Development Pathway

The school offers a pathway that looks at developing students around all aspects of their performance and their leadership. The pathway will offer the students the chance to not only develop as great athletes but also as leader’s and referee’s. This pathway is open to Key Stage 3 students who have to apply and go through an interview process to be accepted on the course.

The department holds an Annual Sports Presentation Evening where the sporting success of the students is celebrated. This is always a very successful evening and the department invites ex-students who have become professional sportsmen and women to present the awards.

Enrichment

In addition to the vast extra-curricular sports programme, the Department also organises trips to a variety of events. For example a bi-annual Sports Tour and Ski Trip. We also attend a number of elite competitions.
